I recall reading a mega Sachin Tendulkar interview over a decade and half ago in a magazine called "Cricket Samrat", in which he revealed he only drinks champagnes, that too preciously on celebrations, cause he wanted to play for a long time.
Today when this most popular Indian is close to climax of his career, I finally digest what drive he has had throughout his life ~ to win as many matches for India as he can and in process, break all possible records.
Tendulkar has achieved his dreams, with the exception of a world cup may be for which his desire continues. Here's a summary of his statistical achievements :-
Most runs in career : Sachin is past his 17,600th run and is fast closing in on 18,000 runs in one day career while in tests, Indian is past 14000 runs. Sachin's nearest rival = Sanath Jayasuriya of Sri Lanka and Ricky Ponting of Australia, are hovering around 13k runs while Ponting is almost 2k runs behind him in tests
Record List : Most Century (Hundreds) in Test Match Cricket
Most test Century:48 tons in tests, 9 ahead of his nearest rival Ricky Ponting. Mahela Jayawardene (28) of Sri Lanka and Jacques Kallis (35) of South Africa may break this record that Sachin Tendulkar holds. Each and every batsman starts with a duck, a zero. Going off the mark, into double figures, half century and then the magical triple figure individual score.. and in between, you run your partner's runs as non-striker as well as resuming your innings the next day which is very very tiring but less highlighted aspect of cricket. indeed making a test match ton isn't a joke!
Sachin Tendulkar is the champion of centuries, in tests as you see in following table as well as of most ODI hundred list. Ricky Ponting of Australia is his closest rival while Protas' Jacques Kallis is silently closing into two legends. Sunil Gavaskar held the record of most test century for a long time before Tendulkar over took him and leads since then.
Rahul Dravid has slowed down in recent times but he too is one of the best test batsman to have graced the game of cricket. Steve Waugh was known for his fighting innings while Don Bradman is star from yesteryears.
Dark Horse might turn out to be Mahela Jayawardene of Sri Lanka. He's already close to 30 test match tons and is young. Mahela is ideal batsman of longer version of cricket, is always hungry and since he has given up captaining Sri Lanka, Mahela might rise up the list very quickly in years to come. his mate, Kumar Sangakkara, has left keeping gloves for longest format and hence is concentrating on raising few 3 figure scores himself.
Setting the record straight, following is a list of batsmen who have had a conquered test match career.

Highest individual score by a batsman in one day cricket (ODI)
3 years since I analyzed batsmen capable of scoring one day double century, Sachin Tendulkar today (24 Feb 2010) made the first ever one day double century, off 147 balls and now holds the record of highest individual score in one day cricket matches..
Debate : who holds record for second highest ODI score? Coventry was notout on 194 but Saeed Anwar took 10 balls fewer to make equal number of runs!
Even today, I agree, making 200 runs in a single 50 over match innings is a difficult ask, but like Tendulkar, modern day batsmen/bats has shown glimpses of this miracle happening, someday again soon. Today when over 400 runs can be made and also chased down (S.Africa beat Australia, chasing 434), why can't a batsman, preferably an opener or number 3, put his head down to the task, gets a little lucky and a little greedy to do what's only once done?
Fact : ICC has set 70 yards as minimum boundary length on either side of a cricket field, but several grounds around the world are shortening their edges cause spectators appreciate fours and sixes more than ones & towes. if Tendulkar can do it in late thirties, someone in twenties can certainly reclaim the top position in following list.
Here are the batsman who have come close to it in the years gone by.
Note : Only scores of over 160 are in the list below. There have been 25 other batsman with a 150+ score in ODI cricket but they need to do more to enter following elite list!

Highest Individual scores by a batsman in one day Internationals
Sachin Tendulkar's record breaking one day double century is now highest ODI score but who are the other batsman who held it before Tendulkar? Saeed Anwar was leader between 1997 to 2009 until Charls Coventry equaled him. John Edrich's 82 was the highest score in the first ever ODI, which was then broken by DL Amiss who made first hundered in 50 over cricket = 103 in 1972. Roy Fredericks broke that record inside a year with his 105, which was then broken by English David Lloyd's 116 not out against Pakistan another year later in 1974.
Glenn Turner of New Zealand owned the record with his 171* against East Africa for 8 year, since 1975 to 1983 when Kapil Dev made 175* against Zimbabwe. Vivian Richards then held the record for 12 years, from 31 May 1984 to 21 May 1997 when Saeed Anwar hit 194 against Indians at Chennai as you seen in the above list.
